Excerpt from letter to the U.S. Chamber by Morris Strickland, chairman of the board of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, and Carla G. Todd, its president and CEO.

“At the monthly meeting of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in Pascagoula, Miss., we agreed unanimously to send you a letter expressing our concern over your recent opposition to House Resolution 1264, the "Multiple Peril Insurance Act."… We regret that in doing your due diligence for your position on this bill, you did not call the Gulf region Chambers of Commerce that were at the center of Katrina… We implore the U.S. Chamber to take another look at the multiple-peril issue. Please don't be quick to seal the fate of thousands of citizens that live in the Southeast.”

U.S. Chamber is "800 Pound Gorilla" This Election Cycle, "Like Giving Republicans an Extra National Organization"

Politico Op-Ed: Why 1982 Offers No Solace to Dems

By: Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson, 9/16/10

“The 800-pound gorilla is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has emerged as the deepest-pocketed foe of the Obama administration. It has pledged more than $75 million to defeat high-profile Democrats. That’s more than the combined total of the $22 million cash on hand of the RNC and $36 million of the Democratic National Committee. With its huge resources and ability to target money on critical races, the Chamber’s expanding role is almost like giving the Republicans an extra national organization.”

U.S. Chamber "Backs Away" From Small Business Bill by Supporting Amemdment To Strip Preventative Care Fund

Times Picayune: Sen. Mary Landrieu hailed at milestone in effort to help small businesses

By Jonathan Tilove, 9/14/10

The Times Picayune reported on the U.S. Chamber’s aggressive support for an amendment to the Small Business Jobs Act that would repeal provision 1099 reporting requirements on small businesses.  The amendment failed to pass but according to Tilove,“Bringing the 1099 grievance to bear on the small-business bill was seen by some Democrats as a Republican stalling tactic, and it may have succeeded in giving the Chamber reason, or cover, to back away from a bill that has come to take on a highly partisan edge in the run-up to the mid-term elections.”

New York Times: Chamber of Commerce Accused of Tax Fraud

By Eric Lichtblau, 9/10/10

“With a war chest rivaling that of the Republican Party itself, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has emerged in the last year as perhaps the Obama administration’s most-well-financed rival on signature policy debates like health care and financial regulation. Critics on the left have long complained about the chamber’s outsize influence. But now they are taking on the business association directly, charging in a complaint filed Friday with the Internal Revenue Service that it violated tax codes by laundering millions of dollars meant for charitable work from a group with ties to the insurance giant A.I.G. The complaint was brought by a group called U.S. Chamber Watch, which was created four months ago…”

Posted By: SC Small Business Chamber of Commerce, 9/7/10

“So here is the good news. A study appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that the new health care law will be good for small businesses and their employees. The study conducted by the highly respected Rand Corporation using their sophisticated computer modeling predicts that small businesses will pay less for health insurance under the new law when fully implemented.
